In 1977, the American Cancer Society offered smokers even more support, launching The Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday in November. That is not only about quitting smoking, but also about ensuring all Americans are protected from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke in the workplace.
Just in time for the day of Great American Smokeout, a major report on tobacco's status gives cause to celebrate and reason to fume.
Thousands of smokers across the country try to do what feels impossible — give up their cigarettes for 24 hours. The idea is that many will quit puffing away all together.
